Release Party for Solo/Down

By Victor David Giron

This Thursday from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at Cole's in Chicago (2338 N. Milwaukee Ave.), join us to celebrate the release of Solo/Down (Chicago Center for Literature and Photography), an apocalyptic hyper-modern fairytale by our esteemed and lovely editor Lauryn Allison Lewis.

When plants can no longer grow outdoors due to a surge of carnivorous insects, Dr. Amse Thorson is a botanist who must find a way to splice insect and plant DNA in order to give plants the tools to defend themselves outdoors. But when a minor lab accident turns into a horrific catastophe, what will be the consequences? The book is divided into two sections, "Tomorrow" and "Five Years After Tomorrow", and gives readers a glimpse into a world we can only hope will never come true.

In our recent review, Joey Pizzolato writes, "There is immediacy in the prose, both to solve the larger problem entrusted on the protagonist to find a genetic 'fix' to their agricultural plight, as well as Amse's personal desire to bear children, born out of the stark and sterile solitude she is forced to live in."

With an eye on the future of physical books, Solo/Down will be sold in its "Hypermodern Edition" at the release party. These handmade editions are made from scratch and designed specifically with professional collectors in mind (including hardback covers with decorative endpapers, a signature/progenance page, an extended Colophon, specially comissioned cover illustrations, and more), but kept reasonably priced for beginning and part-time bibliophiles.

The night will be filled with stories, cupckaes, lots of drinks, and probably some hugs thrown in for good measure. We can't wait to see you there!
